The Maracas as light percussion instruments, have been studied in most Latin American rhythms. My school came from JOROPO, the music of Los Llanos, which allows the performer  great speed and time precision. Between Colombia and Venezuela at International festivals,  Llaneros specializing in maracas compete hard on stage. As they say there, 'it looks simple, but the tiger is not as they draw it!'.
